'Being ABLE to Teach Online' Presentation and Webcast

Moving courses online has the potential to engage students, improve learning outcomes, and make an educator’s job more interesting.  It also has the potential to frustrate learners, distract from course objectives, and make educators long for the days of chalk and erasers.  This presentation will focus on strategies and tools that can help us successfully integrate online components into our teaching.
These will be broken into the following overlapping areas:

  • Archiving : providing access to teaching materials and students’ learning objects during and after a course

  • Broadening: expanding learning conversations and connections beyond the classroom

  • Listening: enabling teachers to more meaningfully tune in to what students are thinking and experiencing in their courses and addressing the age old challenge of having students pay better attention to what teachers are saying

  • Engaging: introducing additional opportunities for students to interact with each other, the teacher, and third parties who have some connection to course materials.

vancestev

I hear some voices but no presentation, do you hear the same?
Elizabeth Anne
Hi folks - seems like I'll have to go back to the recording - I have the presentation fine Vance!
Maha Abdelmoneim
I see Jeff presenting, I see the slides and I can hear him well too
vancestev

what URL are you using?
Gordana Palada
True but working with young students is demanding regarding privacy so Moodle is great there
vancestev

same as me, will try again
Maha Abdelmoneim
if not try the google+ hangout
vancestev

got it now, wonder what was happening before :-)

Maha Abdelmoneim
:) glad you got it
Gordana Palada
they have to take responsibility of their learning - they don't always like it
vancestev

thanks :-)G
Gordana Palada
great sites Jeff
vancestev

it's given at the bottom of the embed player
Elizabeth Anne
Below the video - the slides
Maha Abdelmoneim
oh right :) thank Elizabeth
Elizabeth Anne
Woah - the pace of new tools slowing for specialists only IMHO - I'm surrounded by teachers having difficulty with pbworks!
Elizabeth Anne
Clap! clap! clap!
thanks very much!
Maha Abdelmoneim
Elizabeth, I agree. It's a good idea that it's slowed down and hopefully more learners and educators can join in before the next big thing
Gordana Palada
Nice presentation :)
Elizabeth Anne
:-)

vancestev

the PBWorks sites I make for my students are created for pretty much similar purposes
Gordana Palada
I'm using Moodle
Maha Abdelmoneim
I've used google docs
Gordana Palada
exploring other possibilities but Moodle seems just fine

Gordana Palada
google docs are great not only for children :)
vancestev

In a recent revision of Moodle objects placed there lost their URLs; that is if you put say an mp3 on the site, it no longer has a unique URL - is that still true?
vancestev

Yay! Webheads :-)
Gordana Palada
I upload the files on the LMS and then use it in the course
Elizabeth Anne
Bye all
Gordana Palada
bye :)
vancestev

thanks Gordana, but if you want to link to those objects from elsewhere, it USED to be possible, but no longer, unless they changed it :-(

Maha Abdelmoneim
very nice presentation and great opportunity for more to join in :) thank Jeff

Maha Abdelmoneim
ThankS .. lol I keep missing the S
Gordana Palada
haven't tried to use it that way

Gordana Palada
but I may try :)
Maha Abdelmoneim
it was very nice being here with you all .. have a good day/evening
vancestev

Moodle CAN be open if you set it that way, but so many objects are buried in there
Gordana Palada
Bye Maha , nice to see you here
vancestev

before they made that change it was possible to run an open course and link to objects in Moodle from elsewhere, which was really useful
vancestev

anyway, I was just curious if they had done anything about that :-)
Gordana Palada
@vancestev - I use Moodle becouse it's a closed system. I work with kids aged 10-14 and it's good to be in safe environment with young learners
Gordana Palada
they can chat, blog, use forums ... they learn how to use technology -their first steps
Gordana Palada
and we discovered BigBlueButton in Moodle and had a conference - children were delighted
vancestev

@gordana, it meets your needs then, I'm coming from a different approach
vancestev

If you would like to come onto http://learning2gether.net/about we are always seeking to share with educators from all perspectives
vancestev

we meet on Sundays around noon to 1500 GMT, some time in there
Gordana Palada
I'd love to :)
vancestev

great, I'll get in touch through G+
Gordana Palada
I will :D
vancestev

doesn't seem to be a way to contact people thru Google + (that leaps out at me) but I have found twitter, FB, etc, will be in touch later
